GSE Awarded More ERC Grants in Economics Than Any Other Institution Researchers at the Barcelona GSE have been highly successful in securing grants from the European Research Council for their research projects. In total four Affiliated Professors have received either Advanced Investigator Grants or Starting Independant Researcher Grants.
Professors Jordi Galí (CREI and GSE) and Joachim Voth (UPF and GSE) were both selected to receive Advanced Grants for their proposed research, while Professors Marta Reynal-Querol (UPF and GSE) and Jan Eeckhout (UPF and GSE) were both selected as Starting Grant recipients. Another Professor, Antoni Calvó-Armengol (UAB and GSE), was in the final round of the Starting Grant selection process when he unexpectedly passed away in November 2007.
These four grants put the Barcelona GSE at the top of the list of institutions receiving funding for research in economics. Tied for second place are the London School of Economics and University College London, which both received 3 grants (Advanced and Starting combined) for projects in economics.
The design of the ERC grant scheme funds teams where the only evaluation criterion is scientific excellence, meaning that only the very best applications from across Europe are funded. The ERC received a total of 2167 applications for Advanced Grants and 9167 applications for Starting Grants, with less than a three-percent success rate.
Because thirty-three per cent of the evaluation criteria were based on the research environment and hosting institution, the selection of four Barcelona GSE Affiliated Professors is testimony to the dynamic research environment of the Barcelona GSE community.
