GSE Board of Trustees appoints three new Research Professors at its annual meeting
On Monday November 2, the BSE's Board of Trustees convened for its annual meeting at the School's Ciutadella campus.
A highlight on this year's meeting agenda was the appointment of three new Research Professors. This distinction is a joint appointment between the BSE and one of the School's founding academic bodies, and was created in the spring of 2009 to increase the critical mass of scientists at the GSE. Research Professorships are funded by the School's research endowment, which is dedicated exclusively to supporting these appointments.
The three new BSE Research Professors are Salvador Barberà (UAB and BSE), Antonio Ciccone (ICREA-UPF and BSE), and Jordi Galí (CREI-UPF and BSE). They join the first two Research Professors, Massimo Motta (ICREA-UPF and BSE) and Nezih Guner (UAB and BSE) who were appointed earlier this year. A brief biography of each of the new Research Professors is provided below.
Prof. Salvador Barberà
Prof. Barberà is Professor of Economics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and a BSE Affiliated Professor. He earned a PhD in Economics from Northwestern University (1975). He is a fellow of the Econometric Society, a recipient of the Rey Juan Carlos Award in Economics and of a Doctorate Honoris Causa of the Universidad Pablo de Olavide.
Prof. Salvador Barberà
As a researcher Prof. Barberà has concentrated in the fields of public economics, incentives, utility and game theory. More specifically, he is an expert in social choice theory, the design of strategy-proof mechanisms, and the analysis of voting procedures. He has co-edited a two-volume Handbook of Utility Theory, and his publications have appeared in Econometrica, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, The Review of Economic Studies, The Journal of Political Economy, The Journal of Economic Theory, Games and Economic Behavior and Social Choice and Welfare, among others.
He is past-president of the Social Choice and Welfare Society and of the Southern European Economic Association (ASSET). He has been elected to the Council of different learned societies, including the Econometric Society, The Social Choice and Welfare Society and The Society for the Advancement of Game Theory. He has served as director of The Spanish Economic Review, and on the boards of different journals, like Econometrica, Games and Economic Behavior, Social Choice and Welfare, Mathematical Social Sciences and The Journal of Public Economic Theory.
Professor Barberà recently served as General Secretary of Research and Technological Policies in the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (2004-2006). Prior to that, between 2000 and 2004, he was the first director of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), a foundation created by the Catalan Government in order to consolidate in Catalonia a group of high level scientists of all origins.
In addition to his new appointment as Research Professor, he is the director and a professor of the GSE's MSc in the Economics of Science and Innovation. Another program in which he has taught is the MSc in Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets. He has also been Vice-Chairman of the BSE.
Prof. Antonio Ciccone
Prof. Ciccone is an ICREA Professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, which he first joined in 1994, and a BSE Affiliated Professor. He earned a PhD in Economics at Stanford University in 1994 and an MSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics at the London School of Economics in 1990. He is a research associate of CREI, Research Fellow of the BSE, and Fellow of the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and CESifo.
Prof. Antonio Ciccone

Prof. Ciccone specializes in research and teaching in macroeconomics. His research has been published in 4 of the 5 top journals in economics. He has also been the recipient of the University Research Distinction by the Generalitat de Catalunya from 2003-2007. Prof. Ciccone is a co-editor of The Economic Journal and member of the editorial board of The Review of Economic Studies. He also chaired the Scientific Programme Committee of the 24th Congress of the European Economic Association in Barcelona in August 2009. Prof. Ciccone has taught graduate macroeconomics at UC Berkeley, Stanford University, the London Business School, and the London School of Economics.
In May of 2009 Caixa Manresa and the BSE created the Antonio Ciccone-Caixa Manresa Chair on Applied Economics. The program Chair is intended to promote world-class research and dissemination in Applied Economics and to attract international researchers, under the leadership of Prof. Ciccone.
In addition to his appointment as a BSE Research Professor, Prof. Ciccone is the director of the GSE's MSc in Economics and a steering committee member of the MSc in International Trade, Finance and Development, and he teaches courses in both programs.
Prof. Jordi Galí
Prof. Galí is Research and Director of the Centre for Research in International Economics (CREI), Professor at the UPF, and an Affiliated Professor at the BSE. He earned his PhD in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1989. Prior to joining the Barcelona economics community, he was a professor at New York University and also held positions at Columbia University and MIT. Prof. Galí is Fellow of the Econometric Society. In October of 2009 he was elected Vice President of the EEA, and will officially take on this role in January 2010. He will become President Elect in 2011 and President in 2012. Prof. Galí holds Research positions at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London and at the US National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
Prof. Jordi Galí
Prof. Galí has been ranked as the 8th most cited researcher worldwide in Economics and Business (Thomson Scientific’s Essential Science Indicators SM, data from January 1997-October 2007). He has also been cited as the most productive Spanish researcher from 1990-2004 (“Publishing Performance of Spanish Academics: 1970-2004” by D. Rodriguez, Spanish Economic Review, 2006).
His main areas of research are macroeconomics, monetary theory, and macroeconometrics. His influential findings have had a large impact on a variety of topics, particularly business cycles, inflation, exchange rates and the conduct of monetary policy.
In addition to his appointment as a Research Professor, Prof. Galí also teaches in the BSE's MSc in Economics program.
