Alumni Outlook | David Araujo '09
Director TATA Consultancy Services (Ecuador) | | "I am the director of the Business Intelligence, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Practice for the Quito office of TATA Consultancy Services. I manage all of the projects involving the implementation of business intelligence, as well as those cases involving the generation of new businesses and exploitation of technology, which is all quite closely related with what we studied in the MESI program. "Prior to this, I was in charge of the Technology Exploitation & Entrepreneurship Department at ASCAMM in Barcelona. This involved trying to transfer technologies the center produces in its R&D projects (European, national or regional) into the market, either by licensing our patents or by creating spin-offs." | | Courné Boutkam '08 Operations Specialist Hewlett-Packard |

Project Manager Global Talent Media
|
| "After graduation I did a three-month internship at the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI). Among other activities, I wrote scientific advisement reports for the Catalan parliament and organized meetings of experts from the OCDE and other institutions at the national and European level. This experience helped me determine that I wanted to continue developing my career in the knowledge transfer and communication sector. I went to work at Global Talent, a digital communication platform for the sciences that aims to drive science in Catalonia and reach an international readership. Through tasks such as managing communication strategies, news channels and specialized digital publications and multimedia, I have formed contacts with the majority of research centers, universities, and scientific institutions in the country." | | Christopher Frieling '09 DG Research trainee, "European Research Area Policy" unit European Commission |
| "I am mainly working on the preparation of an ex ante impact assessment for a future strategic framework and an Action Plan for the European Research Area. I am part of a team of 3 people that prepares this assessment together with a consultancy. Most of the time my tasks are rather long-term and I work quite independently. I also have the possibility to attend many meetings, most of them inside the Commission but also in the Council or in the Parliament. Most recently I attended the ERA 2009 Conference. About 500 stakeholders of European research discussed issues of cooperation and research policy in Europe. Also two of the MESI professors, Ramon Marimon (UPF and Barcelona GSE) and Gonzalo León (UPM and guest professor in the MESI program), spoke during the conference. They are both involved in expert groups, as is Reinhilde Veugelers (KUL and guest professor in the MESI program). | | Enric Fuster '09 Program Manager MOVE (Markets, Organizations and Votes in Economics) |
| "After a very interesting and successful internship obtained via the master faculty in the Catalan Association of Public Universities, designing a grant scheme for frontier science in collaboration with a banking institution, I was recruited by MESI's Director Prof. Salvador Barberà to manage the creation of his new project: MOVE (Markets, Organizations and Votes in Economics), a public non-profit research institute in economic analysis. I am responsible for the establishment of the administrative structure, the communication strategy and brand positioning, the application to and management of European and national research grants and the finance and accountancy of the institution.
I am experiencing both the excitement and frustration of building a a brand new institution, for which I am applying the general insights and concrete tools acquired and developed in the master program and related internship. You are all welcome to discover our research and and my job at www.movebarcelona.eu." | | Antonio Henriques '09 Business Unit Manager
Trifermed Group
| | "As a Business Unit Manager at the Trifermed Group I support Life Science companies in their International Business Development activities in order to guarantee the successful penetration of their products, technologies or services in foreign markets. By connecting my knowledge in Biotechnology, Economics and International Business, I am providing biotech and pharmaceutical companies with In and Out-Licensing Services together with tailored Market Research and Advice on Business Strategies. With different clients and geographical territories under my responsibility, apart from the need to manage my own budget and objectives, travelling overseas to meet with potential partners (scientists and business managers), attend international conferences and identify new business opportunities are part of my routine." | | Patrick Lavery '09 Senior Consultant

Researcher Fundació Caubet-Cimera | | "I came into the MESI program with a PhD in biomedicine. Now I am going to continue my research career as a post-doc working with Daniel Bachiller at the Fundació Caubet-Cimera located in Mallorca (Balearic Islands). Cimera is a research centre of excellence in respiratory diseases. I am going to be working on an amazing project that aims to find a cure for the genetic disease cystic fibrosis. We are trying to develop a protocol with stem cells in order to restore patient lung function. I hope to eventually collaborate on the transfer the results of this research to clinical and market applications." | | Kelly Morón '09 Advisor to Vice Chancellor of Doctorate and Postgraduate Programs Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) | | "My job is to foster innovation by evaluating and developing ideas to increase doctorate and postgraduate course competitiveness and internationality. At the UPM, where the programs are based on engineering and applied sciences, issues around economics, innovation, and science are always present when we analyze our programs. Another objective of my work is to create synergies of scientific cooperation between European universities and to between different teams of researchers." | | Acàcia Reiche '08 Project Manager Municipal Institute for Medical Research (IMIM) Foundation |
| “My job with the IMIM Foundation is to keep research projects tight with their objectives and budgets. Although this is already a handful, the real challenge comes from coordinating several international partners with their different perspectives. My diverse background allows me to benefit from my experience in research and apply the knowledge provided by the master program.” |
