"I joined the Office of the Chief Economist and Competition Policy at the Office of Fair Trading right after graduation from the Barcelona GSE. I worked there for two months before moving to the group where I am now, which is called Service, Infrastructure and Public Markets. As an Economic Intern, my role is to support a team of economists and lawyers, collecting and providing evidence to corroborate and make their decisions coherent with economic theory and the current legislation." "As an economic consultant I provide rigorous analysis—both theoretical and applied—on a day-to-day basis for a wide range of projects to help our clients develop strong arguments for their case. I have been mainly involved in competition cases: merger cases and state aid cases. Furthermore, I have also participated in damages and arbitration projects and advised on economic regulation. For example, I have assessed the closeness of competition in a merger case, and I have also quantified damages as a result of anticompetitive behaviour. These projects required a deep understanding of a range of industries such as aviation, pharmaceutical and telecoms among others." |
| Thiago Arashiro '10 Economist Tendêndicas Consultoria Integrada

"My work involves econometric analysis to support companies during their merger process, advising companies against a complaint of anti-competitive practices in the competition authority, or any case related to competition policy. We also have to deal with theoretical issues advising regulated-industry companies (such as electricity) during public consultations. I was hired right after graduating from the master program - the highly practical focus of the program gave me good knowledge to perform this type of challenging analysis." Eye on Alumni Feature |

 | Jake Morris '09 Associate RBB Economics | |
"I am currently working on a merger in the pharmaceutical industry between two of the largest global players. It basically involves defining relevant markets and determining how much market power would be held by the combined entity in each of them following the merger. This allows us to identify those markets that are likely to cause competition concerns, with the next step being to take a closer look at the validity of those concerns per market. As the analysis covers a broad spectrum of markets across a large number of countries, it is a highly data intensive project with a relatively long duration. A particular challenge here is being able to coordinate to collect sufficient data on a global scale and build up a reliable database as the foundation for further analysis." Eye on Alumni Feature |
