Reference PhD Programs in Economics The foundation of the Barcelona GSE is built on the successful partnership of the four founding academic bodies through joint activities and research in economics in past years. The goal of the Barcelona GSE is to enhance this world-class academic community fostering graduate programs in economics while developing a distinctive and substantial research activity. Graduate education at the Barcelona GSE rests upon two renowned international reference PhD programs in economics: the Graduate Program in Economics, Finance and Management (GPEFM) of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the International Doctorate in Economic Analysis (IDEA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. A substantial portion of the Barcelona GSE faculty is involved with these reference PhD programs, making up an intensely vibrant intellectual and research community. A key advantage of the Barcelona GSE master programs is their close relationship with GPEFM and IDEA. Some students at the Barcelona GSE decide to pursue their studies at the PhD level in one of these reference doctoral programs, providing them the exciting opportunity to study with internationally recognized researchers in economics. The Graduate Program in Economics, Finance and Management (GPEFM), offered by the Department of Economics and Business of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, has awarded nearly 160 PhD degrees since it was launched in 1993. GPEFM is a partner in the European Doctoral Program (EDP) in Quantitative Economics, a joint initiative with five other top European economics departments: the London School of Economics, the European University Institute (Florence), the Université Catholique de Louvain, the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris) and the Universität Bonn. The International Doctorate in Economic Analysis (IDEA) is offered by the Unit of Economic Analysis of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Since its launch in 1991, it has awarded 135 PhD degrees. IDEA is part of the European Network for Training in Economic Research (ENTER), a network of doctoral programs with seven other leading European economics departments: University College London, Universität Mannheim, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Stockholms Universitet, CentER (Tilburg University), MPSE (Université des Sciences Sociales de Toulouse), and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
