Field Visits
During the year, MESI students learn about the diverse applications of innovation in research through field visits to a range of research centers, private companies, consortiums, and organizations in the Barcelona metropolitan area.
These visits give students an inside look at R&D in areas such as supercomputing, disease control, and fiber optic cable production. Getting up-close and personal with the innovation process sometimes means donning a white full-body suit and passing through a series of chambered sterilized rooms into a high pressure microchip lab. Other times, it means strapping on a face mask and venturing into Barcelona’s municipal incineration plant to see how the city’s recycling problems are addressed.
The field visits are part of the Research Centers course taught by Prof. Salvador Barberà. In addition, guest professors in the program have sometimes arranged additional field visits to their own institutions as part of the courses they are teaching in the MESI program.
