Xavier Freixas awarded 2013 IEF Prize for Financial Excellence in an Academic Career

BSE Research Professor Xavier Freixas has been awarded the 2013 IEF Prize for Financial Excellence in an Academic Career, given by the Financial Studies Institute (IEF). The award ceremony took place on November 25 at the Hotel Olivia Balmes in Barcelona.

The jury of the sixth edition of the IEF Awards for Financial Excellence consists of representatives of prestigious Catalan associations in the fields of Economics, Finance, and Trade, and has awarded the prize to Prof. Freixas "for his high international academic recognition and for his contributions to banking supervision and regulation."

Professor Freixas is the second BSE Research Professor to receive the IEF Prize. In 2011, it was awarded to Prof. Jordi Galí (CREI and BSE).

About Xavier Freixas

Xavier Freixas (PhD, Toulouse University, 1978) is Chair of the Department of Economics and Business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Research Professor at the Barcelona School of Economics.

He is an expert in finance and banking supervision and regulation and has been advisor to the World Bank (Washington), the Spanish Energy Commission (Madrid), the Inter-American Development Bank (Washington), the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the European Central Bank, among others. He has published in prestigious international journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, Review of Financial Studies and Journal of Financial Economics.

Throughout his career, Prof. Freixas has won several awards, such as the Barclays Global Investors (BGI) Michael Brennan Award, a prize for the best article published in The Review of Financial Studies (2006), the distinction of the Generalitat de Catalunya for the promotion of university research (2002), and the Jacobs Prize for the best research paper (1998).

In addition to his research activities, Prof. Freixas is Scientific Director of the BSE Master Program in Finance and also directs the Barcelona Banking Summer School and Intensive Course on Systemic Risk and Prudential Policy.
