James Mirrlees, Nobel Laureate in Economics and member of the Barcelona GSE Scientific Council

The Barcelona Graduate School of Economics community was deeply saddened by the news that James Mirrlees, an active member of our Scientific Council, has passed away at age 82.

James Mirrlees was Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge. Together with William Vickrey, he was the recipient of the 1996 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics "for fundamental contributions to the economic theory of incentives under asymmetric information."

Professor Mirrlees was very committed to the Barcelona GSE, contributing many ideas at Scientific Council meetings and participating in events such as roundtables, workshops, and our 10th anniversary celebration in 2017. We are most grateful for all the helpful advice he gave us over the years, and will miss his presence and his guidance.
