Alumni Placement Report - BSE Class of 2011
In July 2011, the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE) graduated 165 students. Three months later more than 80% of these graduates responded to a survey giving us the following information:
The 2011 BSE graduates are currently working and studying in 27 different countries. 54% of the graduates who responded were employed within three months of graduation, and more than 25% are continuing their studies by beginning a PhD or other postgraduate program.
Professional Career Placements
Of the 2011 graduates currently in the work force, 46% accepted positions in European countries outside Spain, 23% got jobs in Spain, and 21% are now working in the Americas. The remaining 10% of graduates are working in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Oceania.

29% Banking and Financial Services | Joining the many BSE alumni already working in central banks around the world is Sascha Bützer (Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets), who is now working at the European Central Bank. Other 2011 alumni have also joined the central banks of Brazil, Chile, England, Latvia, Mexico and Vietnam. Major banks of Spain, including Banc Sabadell, Banco Santander, and "la Caixa" Savings Bank have also hired 2011 BSE graduates. |
17% Consulting Firms | Several BSE alumni are working for consulting firms such as Accenture, Boston Consulting Group, Compass Lexecon, Deloitte, and Oxera. Among them are Ilaria Masiero (Competition and Market Regulation) who is working at Compass Lexecon in the United Kingdom, and Philip Pisa (Finance) who is at Accenture in Sweden. |
17% International Organizations | As they have in previous years, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have once again chosen to recruit BSE alumni. Carlos Guerrero (Economics of Science and Innovation) is one of the four BSE alumni that the OECD hired this year. Meanwhile, Fábio Sola (International Trade, Finance and Development) is at the World Bank. |
14% Research Institutions | Several graduates have accepted positions at renowned international research institutions, like Mimi Tam (Economics) who is working at the Bruegel think tank in Brussels. Her classmates are working at the Institute of Economic Studies (University of Iceland), IESE Business School, as well as North American and British institutions including Harvard University, University of Toronto and University of York. |
13% Government Authorities and Agencies | 2011 graduates who have gone on to jobs in government agencies include Borbála Szathmáry (Competition and Market Regulation), Patrick Wolf (Economics) and Manuel Claus Appold (Economics of Science and Innovation) who are now working at the European Commission. Joining the UK Office of Fair Trading is Roberto Alimonti (Competition and Market Regulation). |
10% Other | Some BSE graduates have also chosen to work in other sectors. Anne Tolsma (Finance) is working as a quantitative analyst at Cogo Labs, a Boston-based company offering analytical services to start-ups. Her classmate Marina Kalabina (Competition and Market Regulation) is also an analyst, but Marina specializes in market research for Leroy Merlin. |

Doctoral Placements
More than 50% of the 2011 BSE graduates who are continuing their education chose to enter one of the BSE’s reference doctoral programs: GPEFM at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, or IDEA at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Many others are studying in European universities such as the London School of Economics, Toulouse School of Economics, University of Maastricht, and Université Louvain La Neuve.
BSE Class of 2011 graduates who went on to enter PhD programs in the United States are in competitive programs at Northwestern University, Stanford University, and University of Chicago, among others.
Although the majority of the Class of 2011 who continued on to a PhD studied the Master in Economics, at least one student from every master program chose to pursue a doctorate, including Giuseppe Pratobevera (Finance) who is now studying at the Swiss Finance Institute and Pavel Kocourek (Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets), who is at New York University.

The BSE Alumni Network is growing quickly! Alumni are not only connecting online with the help of sites such as Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter, but also in person. With four promotions of alumni now graduated, small hubs of BSE alumni are starting to consolidate in cities around the world. London, Asunción (Paraguay), and Buenos Aires are just a few of the international locations with growing communities of BSE alumni.
