portrait of Robert Solow

The Barcelona School of Economics community mourns the loss of Robert M. Solow, Emeritus Professor at MIT, Nobel Laureate, and member of our Scientific Council since BSE’s creation.

“This is, of course, a loss for every economist in the world, but it is a very special loss for us,” said Andreu Mas-Colell, founder of BSE. “Professor Solow was with us, helping and encouraging our project from the very beginning, lending his name — not a minor thing — and dispensing his proverbial practical wisdom on how to pursue excellence. He worked hand in hand with Hugo Sonnenschein, the first Chair of the BSE Scientific Council, steering the Council in ways that have marked BSE’s trajectory for the foreseeable future.”

The Council’s current Chair, Matthew O. Jackson (Stanford University), agreed that “We were fortunate to have gotten much sage advice from Bob, the same man who helped build MIT's economics department. Bob's great experience, wisdom, and sharp sense of humor will be sorely missed.”

Professor Solow’s keen mind was evident in a podcast interview he gave earlier this year to fellow BSE Scientific Council member Orley Ashenfelter (Princeton University):
